As you might have guessed, i have decided in my infinite wisdom to start a fashion blog. I say in my infinite wisdom with more than a pinch of sarcasm, as I'm aware that I'm starting this little project as a drop, in an ocean containing people who are more interesting writers, have better taste, and most likely more money and time than me!
Quite how long i keep it up will remain to be seen, i have a remarkable talent for starting things and not finishing them. I had endeavoured to start this in the New Year, but i thought to myself, why wait? Maybe if i buck another life trend (constantly being late for things and/or leaving things to the last minute) maybe this time i can be dedicated and see this through to the bitter end... or at least for a few months ha ha.
So, a bit about me, and my style ethos...
I am pretty fearless when it comes to fashion, i will wear anything you throw at me, as long as you let me style it! I believe the right belt in the right place can make nearly anything wearable, and fashion is more often about the attitude you wear something with, than the outfit itself. I love fashion as art, and you can pull a credible outfit for a shoot out of your grandma's or even your dad's wardrobe, its all about confidence and styling.
On the flip side, i think there's a definite difference between fashion that is form flattering and wearable, and fashion as art. Both are equally interesting, and to style well for the street is as much a skill as styling for the imagination. Certainly its fun to blur the lines but sometimes i think a particular brand of people get the two extremes confused, and will deem an outfit wearable (particularly those worn by celebrities deemed influential in terms of style) when in actual fact if you saw it on the street it would seem pretty ridiculous!
Case in point...

Now Agyness Deyn and Jaimee Winstone look like they're having a whale of a time, not taking themselves too seriously. Their outfits aren't flattering, but it's obvious they're wearing them for impact rather than to look attractive in a conventional sense. Agyness's dress is from the SS09 Henry Holland show, which i would class as the less extreme end of fashion as art. Fun, and clearly designed with a sense of humour, but not the most flattering, and certainly wouldn't translate into the real world.
You might think that she can get away with it, but take the face and the name out of the equation. Go on, just cover her face with your finger and look again people. How would you react if you saw those two queued up behind you to get into a party if they weren't famous? What does it do for her shape? Does the styling and accessorising make the dress look better? As i said, they don't seem to give a toss, and what my opinion is isn't the issue. The point is, you know full well that a whole hoard of feckless people will have decided that what they're wearing looks good simply because of who they are and what they symbolise, and try to emulate it.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE fashion as art. I love to see street fashion that makes you look twice and people who use their body as a canvas. I especially love fashion as art on the runway, and in print, where you can control the environment and context it is viewed in. However, people who think this sort of fashion is more worthwhile than the other, or that it looks flattering rather than interesting are often deluded. These people are usually pretentious twats, who can't distinguish between the two because they are so wrapped up in the industry that they will let someone else tell them what looks good. These people will make you feel that if you don't like something, then it's because you don't understand it. That maybe you just don't get it, because you aren't in the club of people who KNOW about (or in reality, can afford) fashion. DO NOT LET THEM MAKE YOU FEEL THIS WAY! Ideas and great style can come from anywhere. Some designers really are amazing, some aren't. Equally, you can find something completely fabulous, or bloody awful at your local charity shop.
Taste is subjective, and no one opinion is worth more than the other, regardless of what people might tell you.
Love what you love, loathe what you loathe, be fearless in your style exploits, and share your experimentation - whether it be tentatively trying a new colour, or boldly putting a flowerpot on your head!
This is my forum for sharing mine, and giving you my ideas and thoughts. I might not always get it right, and you might not always agree, but that's the beauty of it! I welcome comments and ideas, so if you feel inclined, feel free!
On with the show...
